THE TRYOUT
OFTEN DEGRADED AND CONSTANTLY EXPLOITED….BUT RARELY CELEBRATED,
THE ANOINTED BEING OF WOMAN SHOULD BE ELEVATED HIGH ABOVE THE CLOUDS,
TO BE SHOWERED WITH PRAISE AND ADMIRED BY CROWDS,
HER LOVE AND STRENGTH ALONE MAKES HER WELL-ENDOWED,
PRODUCTS OF A CORRUPT MILIEU,
GIRL INTERRUPTED PLEASE TAKE A BOW,
IN RAP VIDEOS OR HOLLY-HOODS LEADING ROLES,
WE HAVE MADE TO COMMON THE VULGARITY,
OF WHAT WAS MADE TO BE SO BEAUTIFUL,
HER INNOCENCE AND INTELLIGENCE GET STRIPPED DOWN TO CHEAP STREET CLOTHES,HER IMAGINATION BECOMES LIMITED BY THE SEE-THRU UNDERWEAR & DECORATED METAL POLES,THAT TOO MANY TIMES REFLECT HER TRUE SELF AND LIFELESS SOUL,
NIGHTMARE FLASHBACKS AND THAT FAMILIAR SOUND OF STRANGE MEN LOOSENIN’ THEIR BELTS,TRYING TO GET INSIDE HER HEAD BUT NOT THRU CONVERSATION BECOME HARD DEALT,SYNTHESIZING LOVE TO GET SOME PENETRATION TO SATISFY SELF,
OUR COMMON INTEREST SWIM INSIDE THIS MINUSCULE SENSATION,
AS SHE BECOMES THE TARGET FOR OUR VERBAL ASSAULT,
BUT RATHER THAN BE RESPONSIBLE-MEN TO BOYZ BALLADS,
AND TRICKED WHIPS DRIVE HOME THE FAULT,
PARENTS WANT TO SAY IT’S THE EXPLICIT LYRICS AND XXX FILMS,

This touched me in a way that I can’t explain. I was “Ms. Thickness”. I had the body of a grown woman yet I was only 13. My “Thickness” resulted in rape at 14 which was followed by a cycle of low self-esteem and becoming a teen mother. Thinkin all I had or all was is my “Thickness”. But I thank God for Him being in control and showing me that I’m more than my body.

BY FAR, this is my favorite song by Jill. It speaks the truth with such realness and straight forwardess that you can’t help but take notice. This is the world that our females are growing up in and whats sad, they think this is what they are supposed to be. Yes, take pride in your femininity, but dont let others take advantage of you. Know you are more than what the eyes see. Know that you are more than parted legs to be dissed or forgotten when its over. You hold a precious gift. I didnt know how precious until it was too late. Keep doing your thang Jill, I love you for it. And YES, you ARE the REAL THANG!!!!!!!!!!
Malcolm Jackson, Kentucky (4now)// Feb 4, 2008 at 1:34 pm
I love this poem Jill Scott possesses the natural talent to connect to her audience and use strong visualization. Not everybody can reconize the black condition and speak about it acurately and do self evaluation. Until they are educated on their surroundings and can establish what is right and what is wrong. Black Females don’t hear enough from regular people that they are beautiful (queens). Black Men are considered to have personalitie disorders because of the Black condition we all suffer. Music will hopefully be what brings us back. Hopefully. Thank you Jill I can reconize the importance of your artwork.

Jill Scott is one of my favorite artists, and has been since her first album. The music is always fresh, beautiful, ambient and laidback. And I love the old skool’ feel and Jill’s Neo-Soul sound.
and I believe Jill is also a wonderful actress as she portrayed in Tyler Perry’s
“Why Did I Ever Get Married?
Much love you you Jill.
