The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency TV Review
The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (2009)
By Ken Tucker

Drenched in sun-bright colors and the warmth of Jill Scott’s beaming smile, The No. 1 Ladies’
Detective Agency is feel-good television in a way that’s startling from HBO, home of dark, rich stuff
like The Wire and Six Feet Under.
It’s easy to underestimate the adaptation of Alexander McCall Smith’s best-selling novels about a Botswanan divorcée–turned–private investigator. We’ve come to associate all things bleak and gloomy with art and profundity; by these standards, the glowing cheerfulness
of No. 1 Ladies would seem to render it superficial entertainment. But airy buoyancy is every bit as difficult to convey on screen as heavy despair, and just because this tale of a jolly detective is light doesn’t mean it’s slight.

The American singer Scott plays Precious Ramotswe, who, having split from an abusive husband, decides to open up a one-woman detective agency in the small, dusty neighborhood of Gaborone. She doesn’t earn much money, but then, neither does anyone around her, and that doesn’t stop them from having problems (infidelity, fraud) that need solving. She’s not just a businesswoman, she says, she’s there to help ”the lost and the frightened.”
Precious hires a new assistant, Mma Makutsi (Dreamgirls‘ Anika Noni Rose, all bespectacled eyes and brainy forehead), who blinks back
incredulity when presented with a manual typewriter whose keys don’t all work properly.

In the series’ two-hour pilot, directed by The English Patient’s Anthony Minghella (his last project before his March 2008 death), Precious applies common sense and a
Sherlock Holmes-y gift of observation about both telltale clues and human nature. Scott speaks in an English without contractions;
it gives even her simplest sentences — ”I will give you a try,” or ”I sincerely agree with that” — the quiet force of wisdom.

Minghella’s direction sets the tone for the series, placing Scott’s boldly colored dresses against warm green walls and sand-brown buildings. Scott provides big love, but Big Love this ain’t: For a show set in a bustling little city, the pace is so leisurely that the low-key adventures of Precious risk becoming merely precious. (It’s a bit jarring when
The Wire’s Idris Elba — Stringer Bell! — shows up as a glowering crime boss.) Ultimately, however, the charm is disarming; No. 1 Ladies is overseen by exec producer Richard Curtis, who specializes in jaunty fare such as Love
Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral. I’ll be interested to see whether the gentle, genial No. 1 Ladies can carve out a regular Sunday-night audience amid amazing races,
cold cases, and desperate housewives. B

  1. Hi Jill,

I watched the first episode of No1 Ladies Detective Agency aired here in the UK recently and loved it! I remember seeing the name Jill Scott in the titles and thinking..’No…surely not…’ and low and behold it really is you!
I total love your character, in fact, I want you to be my Big Sister, coz no big-boys in the playground g’on be picking on me no more with Her in tow. (i’m 34 yrs old! Lol!) What a powerful lady She is. Fantastic storyline too. Looking forward the next episode. ps. Don’t s’pose we might be able to talk you in to a few live shows in the UK over the forthcoming months…? With the success of No1 Ladies DA, I expect you’ll be doing some PR here in the near future. Please?… *begs and grovels* …
    Blessed Love. Samantha x

  3. Gurl I am sitting here with tears in my eyes. That show was so excellent!
Jill I am so proud of you. I have owned cable for 10 years, and I did not upgrade to HBO until this show. But when you announce that you were going to have this show I just followed the HBO schedule and I order HBO because you, yes gurl you are an excellent actress. The show had me sitting at the edge of my seat. I love the back drop, the music, your singing and most of all your acting with the other cast. I was cracking up, laughing out loud and crying. Anika Noni Rose was hilarious; she is an awesome actress as well. Typing on both of those type writers was funny. She wanted her a Mac or a PC she was not feeling it. (lol) And finally, your scene with Ibris Elba was just was hot, scary, yummy, and twisted up into a great mystery. I look forward to next week!

  4. Loved it! My 9-year-old daughter saw you on the screen and said, “Oh, I love Jill Scott!” I’m so glad you branched out with this show! We will always support you!

  5. I loved the show, my sister my mom and I watched it last night, we were laugh into the show, job very well done by everyone. The show had depth, it was funy, but it had mystery to it. I loved it, I will be watching and I’ll tell others about it too!

  6. Great new show. Saw it twice. I am hoping it stays on the air.

  7. The show was fantastic!! Jill Scott did an amazing job and the location was beautiful. My family enjoyed it and it sure is a far cry from Oz, The Wire etc. I hope it stays on. It won me over. Side Note: Congrats on your first baby Jill. Cherrylocs

  8. Let me be the first to say Happy Birthday Jill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. OMG! I absolutely love the show! Jill is awesome! Wonderful actress!!! I watched the first episode Sunday and tivo’ed it and have been watching it everyday since! I cant wait till Sunday!! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!! Go girl!!! And congrats on the baby! you will make a wonderful mother because you have a beautiful peaceful spirit!! much love!!

  10. Oh how I swelled with pride, while watching Jill’s performance on screen. Drawn first by her remarkable command of the South Afrikan accent, I became mesmerized as the story unfolded and her words and those of the other actors became a a sweet melody to my ears. The more I listened the more engrossed I became in the story.

How “refreshing” to be totally consummed in a Black storyline that was free of stereotypical norms,. by one that presented our Afrikan brothers and sisters in an advantageous light, free from the “bush” or the usual “drug oriented, self-destructive, chicken church couch orientation. I was able to identify with everyone and so loved the dedication of the “secretary”, as I am one, and her dogmatic, dedicated approach to being the best assistant to the dective agency as well as to Precious was both amusing and heartfelt.

I give Tyler Perry his props but believe me, he’s always left me feeling as “though there was still something missing, some level of depth that hadn’t quite manifested in his storyline (smile). That’s for all the writers(LOL)>

Bravo! Bravo! – followed by “More, More, More”
    soon…. soon… soon.

Give us more HBO, more of our own writers, and actors, and comedians…. we are a intelligent, discriminating audience who demands more accountability. Isn’t it sad that there isn’t even a station that offers a Black paradigm of the news?

Now – I’ll just sit back and wait for you to get the recognition you deserve for this work!

God Bless you Jill and the entire staff that worked so diligently to make a profoundly, enriching series.

See you Ms Marple and to all those other dectives…. At last, I have Precious!

    BRAVO!!!!!!!

  11. JS,

The show was amazing. The chemistry of all the characters was great. Loved your secretary .

Jill you are beautiful inside and out. Your singing in this was simply beautiful. I love to hear you sing but singing on this you sounded like the beautiful angel that you are!

    Stay Blessed

  12. I have not stopped watching the premiere of this perfect gem of a show since i recorded it on my dvr and have watched it everyday since its premiere. sometimes twice a day. first of all, the stunning camera work and cinematography is amazing and uncomparable! THE COLORS OF BOTSWANA AND THE BEAUTIFUL LITTLE SHOPPING MALL ARE SOOTHING AND FLAWLESS! second, congratulations to the great jill scott!!!!!!! she IS JUST PERFECTION! I CAN NOT WAIT TIL THIS SUNDAY TO WATCH IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!!! IT IS NOW MY FAVORITE SHOW ON TV!!!!!!!!!! IT IS PERFECT!!!!!

  13. GREAT SCOTT!!
    GREAT JILL SCOTT!!!
I also wanted to add that i laughed AND i cried watching this gem!!! that is a sign of a GREAT show. I am sure, if the critics are smart, this beauty will win multiple awards!!!!!!!!!! Anthony Minguella, God rest his soul, did an oscar-worthy job. Everything about it is beautiful.
Alongside the great Jill Scott ALL the actors were incredible!!!! EVERYTHING IS RIGHT ABOUT THIS SHOW. That review up there does not do it justice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU JILL SCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. I had heard of Jill Scott before I watched No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, but I wasn’t prepared for what I’d see. Ms Scott, you are a revelation. I have to say, you are so beautiful onscreen that not only did every other woman look skinny and pinched next to you, you actually made me, as a plus size woman, feel proud and beautiful in my skin because I look more like you than the skinny girls.

I think this show will be an instant classic, and that it wll be due to its two lovely stars, you and Botswana.

  15. I just watched the first episode of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and am so filled with joy that I had to write to you before I went to bed. It makes me so hopeful and happy that a show like this is on the air. Jill, you are phenomenal. What a wonderful, wonderful character and role model. And you play her with such grace and joy. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  16. Hi Jill! I just want to wish you a Happy Happy Birthday!! Have a blessed day and many more to come!

    Peace and Love.

  17. I loved and would purchase the movie The No.1 Ladies’ Detective agency. I just got hip to it by browsing my Verizon cable menu. Brilliant and another testimony to the talent and blessings of Jill Scott. All should watch and be blessed. It really is good. A series should be done if not already. Thanks to all.

  18. Oh and i have a crush on your secretary. She is so out there, yet witty and whimsical, beautiful and sexy. Have to get her name. You two make a great team. And I hope the wife comes back and apologizes for not listening and gives you a chance to be heard so she can leave dude. I will be watching tonight at 8 as HBO just revealed that it IS a series and will be on again with the second part.

  19. Dumela MaScott, (My Sunday night Appointment)

Every Sunday night at 9pm, I put the baby to bed brew my “bush” tea I am glued to my telly laughing my head off. U did good gurl. Congrats on ur forth-coming bundle of joy. Enjoy him!!

As an African woman I feel very well represented in body and spirit, u managed to capture the realism and heart of Africa.

    I am a huge fan….

  20. I would like to congratulate Jill Scott. I am already a fan of your music and a bigger fan of your poetry and feminist views. I saw your new show and I am amazed. I am sure this role must have been a challenge for you. I can say you rose to that challenge beautifully; and may I say, you are radiant as always! Keep on doing what you do and being who you are!

  21. I wanted to add how you beautifully embrace that culture, I am from Togo in West Africa, and when I watch this show, You bring me right back home. the dresses you were. I am nostalgic. You are a positive figure of black women out there and the fearlessness of your character is inspiriing.

  22. Jill, Jill, Jill….Oh my goodness….Congratulations, my sister. You are simply amazing in this series. You embraced this character and brought her to life in such a tender, yet strong way…And the accent is superb. “Precious” you are in this role. The cast is amazing…the backdrop is amazing…the story line is amazing and absolutely refreshing to watch. I, like others, just can not stop watching it until the next episode airs. I am jumping for joy to see such a beautiful and funny story set in Africa, while touching on some of the issues there! It truly does warm my heart. Happy belated birthday and congratulations on becoming a mother and, hopefully, an award-winning actress ! I wish you much peace and many blessings ! :-}

  23. I love, love, love your new show. It’s beautifully shot, written and acted. And Jill, you are so good!! Everyone is good.

  24. I love this show!

    New and refreshing.

  25. Jill,

I just love you! You did your thing sis. From the stage to the big screen, it is always a pleasure, I was 9 months pregnant jamming to you in MD outside, shoes off, you comforted me then and now, after having the baby, I have something to sit back and watch that is so new and refreshing, I am loving the show, it’s so wonderful to see positive depictions of my people – please keep it coming…keep standing strong for us! Love it!

  26. Hi Jill
your TV show is causing quite a stir over here in the UK. We’ve just been talking about it here at work (I work in a Detox Unit in London) amongst the team of nurses. I asked my colegures if they had heard any of your music. All were suprised that a) you were American, and b) that you can sing. I had to set them right and explain that you are thr GREATEST living singer out there today. All have said that they will go track down some of your music. Im glad you’re fullfilling your potential as an artist. You just AMAZE me Jill. “Beautifully Human” is up there with Marvin’s “Whats going on?” and Stevie’s “Songs in the Key”. Thank you and Thank God for your gifts.
    J.B.

  27. Saw both episodes and LOVED it! The characters are interesting and funny. I’m so glad there is finally another GREAT show to watch on Sunday nights!

  28. I absolutely loved all the Andrew McCall Smith books in the Ladies #1 Detective Agency Series and I can see I’m going to feel the same way about the HBO TV series. Jill Scott, the perfect Precious, and Anika Noni Rose is just as I pictured her. What fun those two will bring to the screen. Can’t wait for the interactions with Charlie and his brother.

So often TV/movies don’t do the books justice, but I think this series is going to capture the essence of the good people of Botswana as expressed in A.M.S.’s books. I hope so.

  29. Mma–

“Agency” is awesome. I hope you and HBO and the rest of the cast win Emmys and please DO A SECOND SEASON.

    Peace.

  30. Hi Jill,

Just to say you are absolutely fabulous in this series! I love your music and love love love you as the African Detective. Pls let the ‘hair dresser guy’ know I think he’s just great too. The cast is wonderful… keep up the good work!

  31. I am in a state of shock. I have watched the series since it began, but always missed the credits. I saw the main character and I thought I knew her from somewhere else, Jill Scott came to mind, but I dismissed it because of the accent. Today is the final episode on tv and I saw the credit and it is Jill Scott the singer. Although I know my instinct was confirmed to be right, I still decided to go on the net to make sure there isnt two Jill Scotts. I am truly amazed at how talented you are. Not only a great singer, but a formidable artist to. At first I didnt think I would enjoy the show, but I am hooked every sunday. You are a beautiful woman and I can only pray you continue to do well in this world. Your talent is exceptional in my mind. God bless you now and always,

  32. I am so moved by the warm characterization Jill Scott offers in this groundbreaking series that I, too, have been laughing and crying for joy. Jill Scott, may you and your family enjoy continued blessings for defeating so many stereotypes about women of color.

  33. Ms Scott

Congrats on your pregnancy and i can’t wait to hear what you have named your son. My girls and I enjoy the new show. Great work and i am inspired by you.

    well done

  34. Jill Scott is not only an amazing singer, but I have now learned she is also a furious actress. The proper and punctional grammar, fascinating atmosphere and attractive and intelligent storyline of No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency make this show an easy addiction. Jill Scott , you are gorgeous!!

  35. I have read all of the books from this series and was already in love with Precious and the entire crew. I was so pleased at the wonderful job everyone has done to bring this to the small screne. The music, the feel of the country, the wonderful and enchanting characters have all bounced up off the page and have delighted me yet again.

Of course, Jil Scott is an incredible talent. Her voice, her manner and her interpretation of Precious is perfect, as is Makutsi and the gang at Friendly Motors.

Congratulations on a job well done.

  36. I just love the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency! Jill, I wish you best with your soon to be here baby boy! Now, back to the show. Precious makes me feel right at home. I look forward to watching the series and adding it to my DVD collection.

  37. I love your new show I think you are a wonderful actrist it fits u. i wish u much success. I love you

  38. keep it up, i know a lot of ladies who love and adore you, keep up the good work, infact your act on #1 ladies’ is still my favorite better than tyler’s movie, i am just been honest, i called all my friends and we had a viewing party for the first episode and now friends have been saying we need to turn it to a weekly thing cos its on a sunday, much love from my family to u.

  39. Wow now I know who Jill Scott is and I thought she was just an actress but she can sing and I mean really sing!

  40. Great show! Didn’t know you had it like that. Wow!

  41. I love the show! It is fabulous!

  42. A year ago I was in London and by chance switching channels late night I caught the first episode. I remember thinking, I know that face, but the accent threw me. I didnt stop watching because not only did I enjoy the flick, but I was trying to remember who you were. Imagine my surprise recently, yes flipping channels again, and came upon a discussionn regarding the show….It is just wonderful, such a breath of fresh air. I have been watching, and will continue to watch…congrats and good luck…I am loving it…

  43. Jill. Luv ya girl! You represent for the beauty of colour and size and strength.

You represent abundance and love in all that you do. You never fail to lift me up from dirt and depression that often threatens bury me.

Thank you for all that you are and do!!! As for the No 1, Detective Agency, you are a perfect fit for the role. I loved the traces of sensuality you brought to it. I loved the roll of your bodacious behind whenever music played. I guess i just love you and the air around you and the colour it turns with the smile in your voice. Too much? OK then…

  44. My aunt and I watch the show religiously every Sunday on BBC1. We laugh our heads off every time. You, Noni, Lucian, and Desmond do an awesome job. LOVE you!

  45. When you have read about a character in a book and become involved you can worry about how they are going to be portrayed in the media. Jill Scott’s megawatt smile soon put fears to rest on that score. And when Anika Noni Rose stepped from that bus and pegged her way across to the Agency we well knew we were in safe hands. Two very fine actresses.

  46. I love this show and Jill and Anikahave such grat chemistry. The characters are so charming. It’s funny, touching and beautifully made without being overbearing. I’m totally addicted.

  47. I think that you are a very beautiful woman inside and out. I LOVE your new show on HBO. Your albums are great. Keep doing what you are doing. YOU ARE GREAT!

  48. Hi Jill,
I absolutely LOVE this show! You are amazing and breathe life in a character that is warm, funny and captivating…. I have watched each episode at least 3-5 times and i patiently wait every sunday for a new episode. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency is refreshing comdedic drama and i hope it’s renewed for another season… Thank you for being an awesome actress and singer (love ya)!

  49. OMG…I have watched all four of the showed, and I have loved everyone of them. They make you laugh and cry, I’m really glad that I gave this show a try. I can’t wait to see the next show.
I put this post on the other site, but didn’t see wht show it was for, lol, silly me

  50. I am absolutely blown away by Jill Scott’s portrayal
of “Precious Ramotswe” in my new favorite (and now reason for keeping my subscription to HBO) show. I have seen every single episode – and there are not enough words to describe the beauty of this amazing show – on every level.
I’ve always been a fan of Jill Scott’s music.
Now I have yet another reason to adore her amazing range of talent.
I am looking forward to many new episodes of “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency”.
All of the characters are amazing.
Thank you, Jill Scott – for the precious gift of “Precious”!
    Most sincerely,
    Susan Mitchell

  51. Hey Jill,

Love the new #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, sort of a play on words since I’m sure by the time I’m writing this, it will be #1. Excellent!!!

  52. Love, Love, Love, No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. Ms. Jill is just too much. Hope this show stays on for some time.

  53. Absolutely amazing program! I haven’t been this excited about a television show since the Cosbys. Jill, your talent, what a blessing. Our family watches and records every episode. We are also learning about Botswana at the same time. Fabulous work that we hope will go on for very long run.

    Thank you!

  54. I stumbled upon the show wen the first episode was about to air and i am telling you i am hooked now. Precious is the bomb!! lol i love her and i have to admit that Anika Noni Rose is adorable!!

I wish you Jill and the show all the very best and i hope it stomps out all the competition because this is the wholesome, fun shows that are lacking on our tv screens.

keep up the good work and congratulations on the new baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. I’m wondering why the “official website of the no.1 lady” removed the announcement of her son’s birth?

  56. I just love this unassuming show–it is a breath of fresh air for HBO- Jill(Precious) is excellent for the part and her accent is good. Mma is to me is the Steve Erkel of the show but not in an annoying way. I just love the show period!

  57. Thought I would check out your show because I love your voice. Didn’t think I’d like it much but found I couldn’t stop smiling. (I thought the “snake on the road” episode was hysterical.) I find the entire cast endearing and hope that this highly unusual and entertaining program continues for a long time to come. Kudos from Canada!

  58. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the show. I love the way The No.1 Lady Detective thinks. Its my regular Sunday appointment.

Also, congrats on your baby boy!!!

  59. The BEST series in all of TV for many years!

  60. Jills talent has blown me away. I had never heard her singing before and didnt know who she was until I saw Jill on the No1 Ladies Detective agency and I cant believe how beautiful her voice is and her acting is amazing too. Her musical and acting choices are perfect. Her lyrics are truely poetic. Im not really a big fan of anybody but Ive become a big fan of Jill Scott. She is most definitly a No.1 talented lady.

  61. I have been watching the show and love it! Colorful, funny, warm, genuine charm by all the characters. I like the plots, in fact, I’m enjoying the charm brought on by Jill’s character, as well as her ‘assistant’ Nonie’s character [and my sister's nickname]. I hope this will be a HIT for prime-time.

  62. Let me add, the style of clothing is awesome! I got a feeling that the African Print dresses are going to be in demand!

  63. Jill,

I loved, loved, loved the show. I happened to catch the first three episodes on, back to back this past weekend, then I ordered them on demand later again the same night. Just as I finished watching them for the second time, and wanting more, the fourth episode came on. Not a big tv watcher, No. 1 Ladies DA, reeled me in. I will continue to watch over and over. The show is beautifully set, the cast is perfect, and had me laughing and crying. Anika Noni Rose is perfect for her role and wonderfully funny. Keep up the great work! Keep those episodes coming! This is a show that should never end. …and congratulations on your bundle of joy.

  64. Sista-luv,

Your show is “precious” as are you. Keep doing what you do. You are phenomenal and whenever you spread your wings we catch a magnificent breeze. Blessings be upon your (our) family. Keep those spouting negativity far away, your mother wit is guiding you well, strong, and faithful to the people, and bump anyone who sez otherwise! Continue to inspire and being a beacon of love and positivity to our people. Forward ever!

  65. I was fortunate enough to catch the debut of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and I have made a point to watch it since then. I must say that I love the show…I love it because it creates an atmosphere and a community that I would love to live in. While there a evil things going on around the little neighborhood, the people who live there are so respectful of others and of their community and their country, that the evil is dealt with and cannot insinuate itself into the people of the community. I would love to live in a place where one is not hurried or harried but where one can breathe between words because we’re not rushing off somewhere…well, I wish all people could live in an environment that this show has created, where each of us counts and we hold ourselves accountable…where respect and looking out for others is a way of life. Where it’s cool to be good. Where we each step up to take responsibility for ourselves and our community. Where action comes from love, not hate.

  66. Hello Sister,

I really, really hope you get to read this! I had heard about the No. 1 Ladies’ books and series but wasn’t interested due to the typical stereotyping of African’s and I did not wan’t to read or see anything which would just end up annoying me!

It was only when upon being bored I started channel surfing and thought that a South African program was being broadcast that I realised it was the No. 1 Ladies show. I was soooooooo impressed that finally a production company had managed to get the African rhythm and spirit on the head!

Further to my shock I found out that Jill Scott was not born and raised in Africa. Jill you did a great job at catching the typical African habits – the looks, the tilting head, clicks etc. down to a T. You had me fooled.

Living in a cold Europe for many years I constantly feel like a fish out of water because I miss my warm, vibrant greeting and laughing African brother and sisters. My husband has bought me all ten books to keep me warm on chilly nights.

Thank’s for bringing me once a week a little of Africa – until my dream comes true of returning to my beloved Africa. Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I have also just listened to your music – now I am a hooked Jill Scott fan.

    NYABONGA KAKHULA
    HLALA GHALE

  67. Hi Jill, just love your performance on No.1 Ladies’ detective Agency. I knew you sang but you’ve got that Botswanan accent down pack and I’m just in love with it. The show is refreshing, with pure and decent , no violence or obscenity , showcasing the heart of Africa. Got my husband watching as well. Congrats o the birth of your son. Continue to do well cause we’ll be watching, can’t wait to see what Precious will do next. Much Love, Evelyn.

  68. Congradulation on the new Baby!!!

Thank you for #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. It shows that not every African country is at war, that you can have a great program without nudity and swearing and playing the fool.

Keep it up. I hope it is renewed until YOU decide to quit.

And lastly, thanks for the beautiful music you sing.

It even reignited my love for drinking bush tea on a regular basis (I’m so corny)! It is so wonderful to have wholesome, quality television. I told my whole family to watch! Kudos to Jilly from Philly on her acting chops. No surprise, everything Jill touches turns to gold!

  75. Precious Ramotswe in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is a top class acting performance for the incredible lovely Jill Scott. The series is heart lifting and makes you long for Africa. Life is complicated everywhere but it just seems so more enjoyably simple in Gaborone, Botswana!! Thank you so much, Jill.

  76. My wife and I love the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. Jill Scott and the rest of the cast are excellent. I hope that they make at least 100 episodes.

  77. Hey Ms. Scott

Congrats on your new baby boy! I’m so happy you’re a mommy now. You’re such a fabulous sista, I completely love your show, you are the highlight of what it means to be an African-American women. Enjoy that baby while he is a baby, cause gurl I am in those terrible two’s right now with my son and I so wished he would go back to that little innocent little baby that didn’t get into every thing. Much love and respect for who you are and what you’re trying to do. Know I’m going to always support all you do because unity is powerful!

  78. I love “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” — Jill Scott is amazing. The episodes are funny and warm hearted. The cast is amazing. I can’t wait for each Sunday night — and I’m sad to say that the last episode in the series is this week. I hope there will be another installment!!

  79. Jill,
I absolutely love this show. It gives me such a warm feel good feeling! Jill you do such a fantastic job with the accent. Your talents are endless! I look forward to seeing more episodes and I promote it to everyone I can. We need more shows like this one. Congrats on the baby! God Bless.

    Erica

  80. I happily await each episode of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Jill Scott is marvelous.

  81. Ms. Scott I want to compliment you on the incredible work that you do on No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. From the first promo, I scheduled my dvr to record and I haven’t missed an episode yet. Your acting is amazing and your smile could light up an entire country. Please pass my thanks along to the entire cast as it is now my most favorite show of all time. Thank you.

  82. I am absolutely panic stricken. I just watched the season finale of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency and can’t believe it is over. It is coming back, right? My Sunday nights will not be the same–I am hooked. Jill, you ARE Precious Ramotswe and I can say that because I have read all the books. So please please come back. You are GREAT!!!

  83. Jill Scott has depth as an actress. I love the No.#1 Ladies show on HBO. It’s very different from any of the shows out there right now. I would like to see Jill do more big screen projects. I think she would be outstanding.

  84. Jill,

Congrats on your new relationship and baby boy!

I’m a “traditionally built” private duty nurse and Ladie’s #1 Detective Agency is “must see TV” for my patient & I on Sundays.

We love Precious, JLB, BK, Rose, Grace, sweet lil Wellington, the silly mechanics (Charley & Fanwell), Mma Potokwane (from the orphanage), 2 Shots Pulani and Rra Patel!

Can’t stand that new arrogant phony detective guy (Rra Buthelezi with his 1970’s style…ew) and Note Mokoti and JLB’s housekeeper (Florence) are just downright creepy.

We spend Sunday night with you and the gang, solving mysteries in Botswana.

    Bravo!

  85. I LOVE THIS SHOW!

It is funny, we can watch it as a family, you have a way of showing the good and the bad but without either overshadowing the other. You make us more human and in a very beautiful way.

I wish you all of the luck and blessing with your new baby boy! Lord knows you are going to need them as I have 2!

But I love the show. Please keep filming, please keep representing us with your music and your show!

  86. I wanted to take a moment and tell you how much I absolutely adore the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency and your gorgeous acting! Please keep up the amazing work and god bless your new baby! kim

  87. Hello Jill,

to be honest i was not a big fan of neo-soul music but for some reason i always loved your music, but i have to say i am a bigger fan of your acting skills. God has bleesed you in so many ways and i think that he has only just begun, and i know more blessing to come. you are a great women, i can’t tell you how you have save my life with one song continue to be yourself that alone is a blessing for us striving wemen to see. i am saving money now to come to Botswana now because of you i hope you will be still shooting your show i would love to come on set and watch. Felicia

  88. I have to say that I am absolutely stunned at Jill Scott’s perfect accent as Mma. Ramotswe. I am from that part of the world and I would have bet money on the fact that she was too. She is doing an incredible job, not only with the accent, but with being able to portray the nuances of Botswana culture, worydisms, etc. She has it all down exactly the way it should be. A perfect choice! It is very hard for an African American to get the accent down pat, but she has it…. absolutely! Thanks for bringing the book to life. I have read all of them, and I look forward to each episode she acts.

  89. Dumela Mma,

Congrats on the baby boy, he will bring you much love and enjoyment, as you have brought to me in the #1 Ladies Detective Agency. I thought nothing could get better than the books, but you are so wonderful. Everytime you shed tears, so do I, especially, when the season ended.

My best to you and your family, Barbara, ,

  90. Jill
I just love the show #1 Ladies Detective! You and the cast do such and excellent job. I can’t wait to see the next season! Congratulations on your bundle of joy! I pray that he grows up to be as healthy and happy as you are. God Bless You!

  91. The best TV series in a long time, sorry that it has finished for now, I hope. The two ladies are the cutest funniest wisest detective, the stories are simple but beautiful, the last episode when Precious chases the “thieves”, the baboons, and she confronts the mean one, is like confronting her ex “husband” mean but very good looking, I wonder if he really plays the trumpet. Please come back soon, Jill, Anika, we love you and your stories and characters in the series.

  92. The best TV series in a long time, sorry that it has finished for now, I hope. Oh, congratulations on your new baby, he must be so beautiful, your fiancee is a very nice looking man and you are just beautiful, you have the prettiest smile ever! B.K. I have seen him in the Long Run, he is so funny as the gay character.

  93. I’ve seen all 7 episodes, loved every one! Defiently hope this one stays on the air. I love how relateable Jill is. Her charicter is so strong. Will continue to watch out for it!

  94. I am extremely excited about the series in which u played ur part extremely well. I was inquiring about when were u goin 2 create more series as seeing I am a big fan an I have all my friends tuned into your show faithfully! I recently contacted HBO in regards to your show an they never responded so I am submitting this inquiry to you in hopes that you will respond back!!! I just cant get enough of your shows!!! I will be anticipatin an answer an if I may, i just wanna suggest that I pray that wasn’t the end of the series!!! It appears you have so much more to share with a wedding to plan an the maid of your fiance trying to locate a gun 2 do you harm.

  95. Ms Scott
You are a revelation. Recently one of the women on the View bemoaned the demise of “black” programs. She was searching for “quality”-she need only to look to you and the #1 Ladies Detective Agency. No pants hanging down around the knees, no foul language, no horrible stereotypes-just a beautiful woman, speaking beautifully and one of the finest programs to come from HBO in a very long time. Please-Please come for another season-my family and I are ardent fans and we have raced home on Sunday evenings to be sure and be in place to see the newest episode you and your ensemble have created.
    Congratulations-you have done wonderful work.

  96. MS. SCOTT I NEVER GO ON SITES LIKES THESE BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY I LOVE YOU IN THE #1 LADIES DET. AGENCY. I PRAY THAT THE SHOW WILL CONTINUE. THIS SHOW IS GREAT I WATCH IT WITH MY 13YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND WE ARE BOTH ARE HOOK ON IT. DO YOU KNOW IF THEY ARE BRINGING IT BACK TO HBO.

  97. will there be a season two for the Number One Ladies Detective Agency?

  98. Jill Scott,
I discovered you through my daughter, one of your contemporaries, who for a long time has had you at the top of her “Favorites List.” Then I fell in love with your persona in Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married,” which led to my purchasing all of your albums. I really needed to know “Who is this Jill Scott?” And, my research has shown me that Jill Scott is truly something else! I love your artistry, both vocal and thespian. The new No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is more testament to your many talents. Please keep doing what you are doing. You really lift my spirits with every performance. I hope you return to New Orleans soon, so I can once again see a live performance. God bless you and your new baby. I’m so very happy for you!
Your No. 1 Senior Citizen Fan,

  99. The first time I saw a Jill Scott video I remember thinking that I’d like to get to know her. Weird from a person who lived in Los Angeles and worked with celebrities. I know too well how often the public persona doesn’t match the reality of the person. After watching the full season of her show I can’t help but feel the same way. I’m in love with her character and the beauty of Botswana and can’t wait for the next season and everything she has to offer us in the future.

  100. My husband and I love “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” with Jill Scott and her funny assistant. We looked forward each week to see each episode. Encore please! My husband was pleasantly surprised when I put the show’s major detective and the singer (by CD-The Real Thing…) together. He said Miss Scott’s accent on the show fooled him. He could not believe it was the same person.

  101. A brilliant first season! And we definitely need a season two!

  102. I just love this series. Jill is wonderful, and Anika is so funny. I’m so looking forward to the next season. Jill is one of the few singers who can really act. I laughed , cried, got angry and rejoiced all in one hour. This series is surprising good, great even. The characters are so well played, I find myself completely involved in thier roles. I’m looking forward to the next season with anticipation. Keep up the good work.

  103. I am so worried that #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency won’t come back on HBO. I’ve called that network and let them know I love the show and have tried to let others know to do the same thing. I realize Jill is happily raising her new son but I hope she can still do the show along with the other talented people who put on the first series that I re-watch often.

  104. Hey Jill,

Just wanted to let you know that I think this show is fantastic! I love it as it reflects the best in us. How wonderful a woman can be regardless of societal sterotypes.

  105. WOW!!

I thought the pilot was good, the series was even better allowing the characters to expand and grow.
You were great Jill, the rest of cast are also to b congratulated.
Sad to hear about Anthony’s untimely death.
    He will surely be missed.
The concept and series cant stop now, despite his early death, I hope that more episodes will be made and shown.
The series and pilot should be nominated for awards.
Well done to everyone who was involved, and thanks also to the Government of Botswana who were gracious enough to allow the series to be filmed in their beautiful country.

  106. I just loved 1st Ladies. I had never heard of Jill Scott before. I don’t listen to songs much. But her amazing work in 1st Ladies has made me a fan, and I discovered her music. I think the back scenes are part of the whole package. I recorded the 7 in the series and had my grandchildren watch them with me. The whole show has real depth. I don’t usually watch HBO, except maybe a movie, but with as much trash as they show I hope the don’t let Ms. Scott and Ms. Rose and the 1st Ladies get away.

  107. Hello Ms. Scott and Ms. Rose –

Just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the #1 Ladies’ (apostrophe!) Detective Agency! I taped every episode (watching “A Real Botswana Diamond” right now!) The story line is just wonderful! The characters, story line — just excellent! Please, please keep us updated as to when Season 2 begins!

  109. Hey is Ms. Scott signed up for another series of No.1 Ladies? I am not going to sign up for HBO if not. It was the only thing that made it worthwhile for me.

  110. Good show Ms. Scott. Was a bit disturbed though that an African show aired abroad first. No biggie though. the accent is just on the T. How did you manage our stick shift/manual 1400 DATSUN that reads “ATSUN”? Love the show and the secretary just makes my day!!!

  111. Just a coreection. a person from Botswana is a Motswana instead of Botswanan

  112. Great show. I absolutely love it & I’ve only seen 1 episode. I don’t have HBO so I would lose my mind to own the 1st season on DVD. Thx !

  113. Congrats on your first baby.big fan of your music.keep doin what your doing, one love sister

  114. My family and I really enjoy “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency”, will you be making additional shows?

  115. I have watched The No.1 ladies detective agency twice now! I have read all of the books and I really hope that you can do some more episodes. You were fantastic..and having lived in Lesotho and Cape Town for more than 20 years I never guessed that you were not African!! Great job!! You were fabulous in the part!!! and now I am discovering you as a singer !
    I am a fan!

  116. I just loved the #1 Ladie’s Detective Agency. I keep watching the reruns, whenever available, so please tell me there will more episodes coming soon.

    Letty

  117. I can’t wait for the next set of series of The No. 1 Ladies’
Detective Agency. It is a pleasure to view television with less violence. It held my interest and Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose made the prefect partners. I hope there is more. Is there more? Her approach to solve problems was intriguing and mesmerizing. I enjoyed them. Is there more?

  118. I will read the novels now. We need more episodes. I can’t wait to buy the DVDs. I have watched the available episodes three(3) times. I want to see more, especially with Jill, Anika, the male beautician, mechanics (same cast). I was amazed to see the bushman (Gods much Be Crazy) & other special guests (mother of missing son in African Heart). The movie, plots and characters made me smile and proud.

  119. I’m SO getting the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on DVD for Christmas! I used to have HBO but, then we got rid of it a few months before I heard about your show and when I found out, I was so mad so, I’m definitely getting the DVD for Christmas! And I can’t wait to see you next April in Why Did I Get Married 2!!!! I love you, Jill!!!

  120. I keep looking for the second season of No.1 LDA, I love the show and love watch Miss Scott in it. Please let me know when the second season starts!!

  121. PLEASE, PLEASE do whatever you can to keep the “Ladies Agency” in production and forthcoming. We love this series; it’s so refreshing, and all the characters are wonderfully drawn. Just finished watching Episodes 1 through 7…

    ENCORE, ENCORE!
    Mardella in Washington State, USA

  122. I loved the show and absolutely ADORE Jill Scott. She is amazing in this show. It was different, interesting, and fun. Anika was fabulous as well. Good luck to all associated with this show. I hope every one will supoort it and keep it on for a very long time.Much blessings to Jill, Anika, and the whole cast and crew.

  123. Hi Miss. Scott,

First congratulation on the birth of your baby. I pray that you both ae doing fine. I am writing to let you know how much your TV show has inspired me.l have never seen Africa protrayed in such a postive and beautiful way. I teach H.S. geography and I have spoken often of your show and the beauty. I am planning a trip to see themotherland soon. Please say the show is coming back. So many young people need to see that side of Africa that never makes it to World News or CNN. May God forever blessd you and yours. P.S. I am not mad at you but songtress, actress and beauty, you go girl.

  124. Have been a fan of Jill’s singing and loved the series (read the books after) Hope HBO will renew for more episodes, but will look for Jill in whatever she’s hired to portray. She’s a jewel!!!

  125. I had to tell you how much I thoroughly enjoyed watching my first video of “The No. 1 Lady Detective Agency” series. (Rented on Netflix) Jill Scott you are magnificient! I’ve always been a fan and am not surprised at the depth and quality of the story line and this body of work. All the characters are very authentic, I love the secretary – it’s very seldom that someone gets met laugh out loud. Way to go Sister! You continue to inspire me how important it is to walk in your purpose and destiny – for truly you are walking in yours. Much Love – Mrs. Barbara H.

  126. Much Love for Jill and everything she does…but Jill, I need help! Season 1 of the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency was off tha hook…I can’t remember rushing home to see a show like that since The Cosby’s back in the day…! Where is tha second season? I’m hooked over here and need an infusion of Precious and tha crew…..JILL, HOOK A BROTHA UP…..STAT!

  127. Anyone ever read Dalene Matthee’s ‘Fiela’s Child’? Wouldn’t Jill be perfect if they made a tv adaptation of this? There’s only a very poor film of it so far, so a good tv film is way overdue – could someone sort that out??!!

  128. Dear Ms Scott,

What a breath of fresh air! I’ve seen the show: No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and absolutely loved it. I asked all my friends and family to watch as well! What we loved about the series is that you can still have good programming without swearing, bloody action scenes and nudity. I was very sad when the series ended and would like to know if another will be following?

I’m sure you and your fellow actors enjoyed Africa and I hope that you’ll be back soon for the follow-up series!

    Very best regards.
    Tanja

  129. ok Jill give us the information on the second season!!! Your fans want to know! And how’s the new baby?? You’re just so wonderful!

    A new dedicated fan,
    Theresa

  130. I really love the series and went out to buy it as well. The character, Precious, is truley the right name for Jill Scott. Her soft and easy voice gives a warmth and a calming feel to situations most would jump and holla about. The casting office was right on the money in casting her for this part. The writers story lines and dialog were never dull and boring. It kept me coming back for more. I can’t wait to see the nexr season! Love you Jill and keep up the great work. You are an inspiration to us all!…..”Ooh, Boo swah aana”

  131. I saw the trailers and I cannot wait for March! Best Wishes Jill!!!

  132. Ms. Scott.

These days not many people in the entertainment industry are worthy of the word “Star” Much less Diva. It seems every half-witted, talentless hack with a self absorbed narcissistic streak will call herself Diva.

I watched the No1 Ladies Detective Agency last night for the first time. I really enjoyed the book, and was curious about the movie. It was wonderful! With a few unfortunate changes, it pretty much kept to the story as written if I recall correctly.

I would also like to say that I was curious about this African woman who played the part so well. Assuming, since the accent and mannerisms were so good, that she Must be from Southern Africa.

Today I happened to watch the second half of “Why did I get married?”, and was very surprised to see the same actress.

Madam, I am not easily impressed, but your talent with voice and acting, is truly worthy of the name Star, and with your musical talent, Diva, Well Done!

  133. I have the first season on dvd and I simply love it!!! When will production of the next season start. I can’t wait until its done. When the next season is over, I will buy that too.

  134. Jill, The Number One Detective Agency was fanbloddytastic! What about a second season, any news yet? It finished on a cliff hanger so I, and millions of others are desperate to see what happens next.

    Yours a big fan!

    Paul :-)

  135. Jill,

My 15 year old son and 10 year old daughter and I love the series… when will they film a second season??? its such a great show and we love the scenery… please continue the series we have to know what happens next!!!!

  136. My friends and family are eagerly looking forward to a second season. You were absolutely fantastic and would have my vote for an Emmy. In my opinion the series should have an Emmy. I’ve been searching website to find info. on a second season. Please say there will be one.

Love to you beautiful talented songstress and actress

  137. What has happened to the second season of the
No.1 Ladies Detective Agency? I keep waiting for it
to come on, but they are still showing season 1.

    Has it been cancelled?

My husband and I both looked forward to each
one of the episodes and have sent must sees
    to all our friends.

It is one the outstanding series on!!

  138. What happen to the show will it be comming on still it was getting good yall leaving me hanging

  139. I am so excited to here that new episodes will begin this month. You and Anika do an excellent job!! I am proud of you both. Truly everyone make that show just a joy to watch. I cant wait to see whats going to happen next. I keep watching recorded shows over and over again, I cant get enough. Keep up the great work!! I am so happy we have HBO now!!

  140. Hey Jill,

I was just wondering if we will be seeing any new seasons of your awesome series No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency? I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!! Please come back…I need’s my fix ;) lol

  141. #1 Ladies Detective Agency is the best show I have seen in years. It is sweet, smart, funny and I do not have to worry that my kids watch it. PLEASE bring this show back for another season. The cast of characters and Jill are the VERY BEST!!!!
    Love it!

  142. No.1 Ladies is an absolutely delightful show. I sincerely hope that they bring it back for another season. I actually looked forward to watching the show every Sunday night.

  143. I loved this show! The whole cast really meshed well together. I adore Ms. Scott; she’s beautiful, accomplished, and she comes across as a very strong woman. I was so angry that HBO did not renew this show, that I canceled my subscription.

  144. Love, love, love the show The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. People are upset because there is no season 2. They are cancelling their HBO subscriptions according to the FB fan page for the show. We really want it to continue. It’s a great show. It’s hard to find quality TV these days so they gotta bring it back. Not to mention that it’s kid friendly. PLEASE COME BACK!

  145. My wife and I have been watching the HBO series of The No. 1 Lady Detective Agent for the simple reason that it resonates with our experiences; we are from Kenya in Africa. I find the series so entertaining, yet with a strong message. Today, in Kansas State Library, I stumbled on the May issue of Essence magazine and I see a picture and a story of a lady with perfect white teeth, who seemed familiar. I continue to read the story “…and Baby Makes” because we have been trying to get a baby too, for five years. I read on and your story on irregular periods is what my wife has been going through. We saw a doctor in Kansas City last month. I was so thrilled to read your story.

  146. I LOVE The #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series. I have been hoping that a new season will be forthcoming. I had a glimmer of hope when my cable company advertised that there would be a new season this April. However, that didn’t happen. Will there be another season? The previous season ended with a cliffhanger, so there has to be additional episodes somewhere! If not, then thanks for a wonderful, refreshing tv show that the entire family can watch.

  147. Not having cable I only recently was able to watch the second two DVDs of No 1 Ladies’ (out of order because I borrowed from library and the waiting list is LOOOOONG) and am SMITTEN, darling! I already fell in love with the books long ago and once I heard (last year or so?) it was being made to a TV series, I have been drooling to see it. I think the cast did a wonderful job and seeing the portrayals also “feeds: my large appetite for learning more about Botswana, a place I’d never before known much about, despite having been born the same day as that country!

I’m really looking forward to getting to # 1 spot on the library list for the pilot, and I really hope HBO and BBC go for a second season. I’d also love to talk to anyone who is also a fan of the series.

  148. “feed”

    sorry for typo :( :D

  149. brilliant season. you were wonderful in your part. ended up reading all of the books after the season ended. please say there will be a season 2?

  150. What happend to The #1 Ladies Detective Agency? I loved that show, I’ve watched reruns and have purchased the 1st season (of which I can’t get my daughter to return back to me). Please tell me you’re coming back, PLEASE!!! I have to know what happens after the last episode, I have to know what happens with the crazy maid and Precious. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, say you’re coming BACK!!!

  151. HI

  152. HI! What really did happen to The #1 Detective? My husband and I really did love that show.

I remember you Jill. You autographed your picture for me at a Missionary Luncheon in South Carolina. I gave you a little speech about success.

  153. Am I the only one who wants to know when if Jill Scott will have more episodes of No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency? My daughter and I really loved this series and hoped it would continue..shoot that was our bonding time! :) Is there any news on current episodes? Somebody holla back please!

  154. hey Jill! much love to you on the show and in general..but when is season 2 coming out?
