Who is… Precious Ramotswe? It’s the moniker of the gumshoe Jill Scott will portray in the “No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” – a TV movie based on the bestseller by Alexander McCall Smith. It’s also the name of the soul singer’s first-ever starring role.
“No. 1…” was written by English Patient scribe Anthony Minghella and Bridget Jones’ Diary screenwriter Curtis Martin, so obviously it’s a dramedy. The story, in general: Ramotswe and her assistant Mma Makutsi (Anika Noni Rose) form a detective agency and become embroiled with a cheating husband, insurance fraud, a kidnapping and witchcraft. VIBE super-crush Idris Elba (The Wire, 28 Days Later) costars, and the film is scheduled to begin shooting in Botswana, South Africa later this month.
But fans already know this isn’t the first time the Beautiful Human has taken to the screen. Scott’s film Houndog (costarring Dakota Fanning and Robin Wright Penn) made a splash at Sundance earlier this year. This October 12, she’ll star in the new Tyler Perry film, Why Did I Get Married?. In that roll, Scott’s donning a fat-suit as an extremely obese woman whose marriage is threatened by a hot single girl.
And in case you forgot what made you love her in the first place… Scott’s new album, The Real Thing, drops September 18.

Ms. Jill, I was delighted to hear that the wonderful book No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency has been made into a feature film! I heard you mention it briefly this morning {9/24) on the Steve Harvey morning show. I love that book series, particularly the characters and their love and pride in themselves and their country. Congrats on your first starring role, and in such a prestigious project with Mr. Minghella at the helm. Kudos and good luck!
I have to let you know that your song “Hate on Me” strikes a real chord with me. As I approach 40, it resonates as I mature beyond the need to attempt to please, persuade or confront those who do not share my views or are unhappy with me or my choices. It captures a similar sentiment as the song MJB tha MVP on Mary J’s last CD. I’ll be sure to pick up your CD tomorrow.
I think I am going to play sick and go get the CD Now I cant wait until 5 pm……….oooh I think I have a feva……. running out the door.
