WHO
Dr. Cornel West, Professor of Religion and African American Studies at Princeton University, is one of America’s most gifted, provocative, and important public intellectuals. Dr. West has won numerous awards, including the American Book Award, and has received more than 20 honorary degrees. West bridges the generation gap on Never Forget by including guests from Lenny Williams and Gerald Levert (before his death late last year) to Andre 3000 and Rhymefest. Though the opus is hip-hop-heavy, West doesn’t consider himself a part of the hip-hop generation.
He calls himself a “Motown–Philly Sound–Curtis Mayfield–generation brother” who “intervenes in the culture of young people.” -The Village Voices Demographics: Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations is among Dr. Cornel West’s most powerful work because it reaches a demographic that may not be familiar with his books or other professional work. Instead of placing a barrier against the Hip-Hop community, he has joinedit. Proving not only that he is a genius, but that the same community that gets so much flack for a lack ofsubstance in their music, is not turning a blind eye to the injustices taking place daily in America. Dr. West, author of 17 books, including 1993’s Race Matters, meshed politics, scholarship and music on 2001’s Sketches of My Culture and 2004’s Street Knowledge. But where those albums infused jazz, blues and R&B, Never Forgetfocuses on hip-hop to appeal to younger listeners.
WHAT
Dr. Cornel West and special guest Tavis Smiley will host a listening experience, where guests will witness an intimate introduction to Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations. Many of the tracks make for an unlikely teaming between Dr. West and artists from both the Hip-Hop and the R&B/ Soul world. As each artist speaks their peace, Dr. West speaks his.
